Troubleshooting SharePoint Search

Have you ever faced a situation where your SharePoint Farm had to crawl external content across firewalls, authentication proxies and Tomcat on an intranet? It’s great when it works but what happens when you see an error in the Crawl Log that says something like the document was poorly formatted? No really.
You have to learn how to use the available tools to debug the search process from both the SharePoint and remote host side. This is my story of how we helped one client determine why full crawls of Tomcat hosted content were failing. We will explore how we broke the problem down into logical steps to eliminate areas of functionality that were not immediately evident in either the crawl or ULS logs.
